From 17:00 GMT, WOMWorld.com/Nokia gets a brand new Experience Map.
Built on Ovi Maps API, you’ll be able to zoom up to city level to see where Nokia devices on trial are [Ha, imagine it was live tracked using the device GPS ].
With Ovi Maps you can of course zoom to street level, but the experience map is set to no further than city level to protect privacy. This city would be where the devices are sent to.
I think it’s great to see where all the people trialling Nokia devices and accessories from WOMWorld are.
Perhaps you’ll see trialists near you that you weren’t even aware of?
I’d be interested to see who else in Wales (if any) is trialling devices.

In Ovi Maps related thought: It’s improving quite a lot. Quite significantly, search has vastly improved on mobile such that I don’t need to use the google maps app anymore (more on this tomorrow).
Want a change from the connecting people hands as your startup? With the N900 you can change the video at bootup/startup. This can be any short clip that the N900 is able to play. Preferably “.avi”. Instructions on how to do this yourself are at the end of this post. Below are some examples of custom startup videos:
1. Nseries N900
2. Blue sparkle
3. Here’s a really nice one, N900 vanishing
4. And another great one from the same user – N900 heart beat
5. The longer version
6. Here’s a double, initially with Nokia hands and then Maemo.org
Note, the original and dark version can be downloaded from this thread.
7. This is from an advert for the N97 with custom fist bump
8. I am Shodan
9. Edit of number 4 with bruce lee
10. Saw! Here’s Jigsaw.
11. Here’s a different Maemo.org start up
The original video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntKz7gpWy0M
12. Dream theatre
How to?
Instructions are originally from this post at talk.maemo.org. If you have any problems, please go to that thread.
Also check out this thread by maemo.org user, claesbas (which I think started off all the other many threads on this topic)
[Fingers crossed one day claesbas' idea that this becomes a simple one step app comes to fruition. Check this thread out]
Things you will need:
default.conf file (you will need to edit this, currently it is specific to the video: maemo.avi). Just save this onto your desktop
rootsh (download and install to N900)
leafpad (from app manager, install to N900. This is to edit default.conf file to match the custom video title, which at the moment is specific only to maemo.avi)
a little patience with xterminal if (like me) you don’t know how to use it
Notes:
Backup or move “Hands-v32-h264.avi” just in case you want to return to it later. [Exactly how to do this, I don't know :s]
Ok, now we’re ready. This is how to install maemo.avi. You will need to alter the default.conf when you change to a different video.
1. Copy default.conf and maemo.avi to the N900’s documents folder
Once you get the hang of it, the final things to worry about are your graphic-design/video-editing skills.
Leafpad recommended instructions
In leafpad, edit the “default.conf” file to match the file name of your video
e.g.
Instead of
[hildon-welcome]
filename=maemo.avi
you’ll change it to:
[hildon-welcome]
filename=insertownvideoname.avi
Then add your modified “default.conf” and “customclip.avi” to N900’s documents folder
2. Open the application “X Terminal” and type
sudo gainroot
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/default.conf /etc/hildon-welcome.d/
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/insertownvideoname.avi /opt/
cd /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
ln -s /opt/insertownvideoname.avi insertownvideoname.avi
Where to get more video clips? Make them!
Find a favourite video clip. There are millions on youtube. To download youtube videos, one way is through keepvid.com
[You might need to convert .flv from keep vid to something your video editing software will recognize] See 5.
Crop a favourite video to a shorter clip. Windows Movie Maker will do.
Add fade out to black to there’s no abrupt ending of the video.
Check if the N900 can play that file. Find “VIDEO CONVERTER” software to convert it into .avi if your video editor doesn’t allow it. Here’s a free one. But I recommend total video converter [not free]
Then follow the instructions again on how to put this on your N900.
Ovi chat is Nokia’s free chat service, it’s available public and for mostly every recent device wheather S60v3, S60v5 or even S40. The service works seemlessly on both Wi-Fi and GPRS and the user has the choice to use either one. It can work in the back ground perfectly (not available on S40) as in BB ad can be integrated in the contacts as shown above.
Features:
- Ovi Account: Ovi account is much more than just chat. Ovi Account work as your Nokia email (yourname@Ovi.com) and you can access it from your mobile and Ovi mail website. Plus your account allows you to access Ovi and sync your contacts, files, photos, calendar entries, to-do-list, notes from and to your phone and access them all in the website.
- Back support: This is may be the most critical, supporting fairly old and simple phones, Nokia is playing a smart game locking customers. List of supported phones quoted from Nokia Beta Labs
Latest Ovi Contacts (version 1.5) compatible with: Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6760, Nokia 6790, Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72, Nokia N86 8MP, Nokia 6730 Classic, Nokia 5800 Xpress Music (excluding PR1.0), Nokia X6, Nokia 5530 Xpress Music, Nokia 5230, Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini

Previous Ovi Contacts versions have also been tested to work on the following devices: Nokia N97, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia E61i, Nokia E62, Nokia N93, Nokia N93i, Nokia N80, Nokia N77, Nokia N75, Nokia 6290, Nokia N76, Nokia 5700 XpressMusic, Nokia 6120 classic, Nokia E90, Nokia N81, Nokia N81 8GB, Nokia 6121 classic, Nokia 6121 classic, Nokia 6124 classic, Nokia E75, Nokia N78, Nokia 6220 classic, Nokia 5320, Nokia 6210 Navigator, Nokia N96, Nokia N85, Nokia N79, Nokia 6650, Nokia 7500 Prism, Nokia 3120 classic, Nokia 5610 XpressMusic, Nokia 5300 XpressMusic, Nokia 6600 Fold, Nokia 8600 Luna, Nokia 3500 classic, Nokia 5310 XpressMusic.
- Personalization: It’s so fabulous !! you can hava an avatar (a small photo next toy your name, not the movie ), a status that you can replace with what you are listinging to.
- Rich Profile: You can have your personal email, mobile, country, city and homepage, for wonderful experience.
- Availability: You can let eveyone knows when you’re availabe, busy, working, ready to chat and even you can go invisible (like offline in MSN).
- Fast message delivery: It wont take more than milliseconds to deliver messages. Tested on wireless conection on 3.5G and it’s typically the same. Also tested with 2G, the difference is not that significant and could hardly be noticed.
- Share your location: For GPS supporting phones, you can share your location with friends.
Shortcoming:
Though this is not a final and official version, it works flawlessly on the phones mentioned above. It, however has some disadvantages over competitors.
- Lack of groups: Ovi chat works like a charm but only between two contacts and it is so far the only significant shortcoming. There are neither pre-found groups nor user created ones. This is the fundamental idea behind the evolution of black berry, and if Nokia wants to give no chance for compition this is the key.
- Sudden crash: This happend few times during testing on N97, N82 and N76, but this is not a big deal as the it can be fixed in upcoming updates.
- Lack of popularity: The service is still not vary common at least here in Saudi Arabia. It could be because it’s not been officially realized.
For more information and downloading Ovi chat you can visit its page on Nokia Beta Labs:
Huh? According to the report, both Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng of Malaysia have filed a joint suit by the Federal government and the Penang state administration against Apple for the iPad. The suit claims that the ideas for the iPad were first registered by the Malaysian government agencies.
Hit the link for more on this story.
Both branches of the government are claiming that the iPad is infringing on the 1 Malaysia and Middle Malaysia concepts, because of its position as a product which places it directly in between the iPhone and the MacBook.
When asked for a comment regarding the suit, the Information and Culture Minister stated, “this is Malaysian culture and we cannot allow others to steal it, just like how Indonesia stole our batik and Singapore, our Ampang Yong Tau Fu.” Earlier today in a press conference, Lim insisted that “we have painstakingly worked with lawyers and marketing firms to come up with an idea that was original and convincing, and now Apple has simply come in and stolen it.”
In an excerpt from the Malaysian Insider “He added that disallowing Apple from using his idea was not acting like a “dictator, chauvinist or communist” but that Apple CEO Steve Jobs was “burning bridges” with the people of Penang and Malaysia, implying that Penang’s relationship with one of its most important foreign investors Intel, who are also Apple’s main chip producer, may have been jeopardized.
Technology expert iVan eNg believes that if Malaysia wins the suit, it could be worth RM2 billion as “despite its obviously stupid, menstrually-linked name, we all know that people will still buy something from Apple even if it is Steve Jobs’ shit in a bag, so long as Apple puts an ‘i’ in front of it or ‘book’ at the end of it.”
We’ll just have to tune in and see how this all turns out.
San Diego, CA–January 12, 2010–PocketMac, the originators of several groundbreaking smartphone software tools, announces a new service that helps smartphone users save their digital life. Until now, when a smartphone was dropped in the toilet or was otherwise damaged, users' data was presumed to be lost forever. However, PocketMac's new service, RecoverMySmartphone.com, recovers that data from damaged smartphones and clones it to new ones. This saves countless hours reconstructing this information. Specifically, the service will rescue the following types of data from smartphones: (*) Contacts (*) Photos (*) Calendars (*) Text Messages (*) Email Messages (*) Music (*) Software (*) Notes (*) And More… Damaged smartphones are a much larger problem that is generally assumed. According to Gizmodo, 855,000 mobile phones are dropped in the toilet every year in the UK alone. That's one and a half percent of their population that either accidentally flushes or otherwise damages their phone. Additionally, Gizmodo says, 58,500 UK phones are damaged by dogs every year. And that's not to mention the 116,000 phones damaged in the laundry. The numbers grow even bigger when you consider that the United States has a population 5 times greater than the UK. This translates to over 4,275,000 US phones damaged in the toilet, 292,500 US phones damaged by dogs and 580,000 phones damaged in the laundry. This is what prompted PocketMac to create this new service. "We've spent over 8 years and 32,000 man-hours dissecting smartphones to see how they work," said Tim Goggin, VP Of Sales & Marketing. "We're now applying that wealth of knowledge to salvage the data from users' smartphones. Before RecoverMySmartphone.com, every time a phone was dropped into water or smashed in some accident, the data was likely lost forever." This service works very simply. Users with broken or malfunctioning phones ship their devices to RecoverMySmartphone's lab.As long as the device powers up, within 5-7 business days, the user's phone and recovered data will be shipped back to them. Optionally, RecoverMySmartphone's lab can clone the data to a new phone. Over 500 makes and models of phone are supported. Goggin continued, "Most of us don't have even one phone number memorized anymore. RecoverMySmartphone.com rescues your life from your damaged phone." The service supports salvaging the data from the following smartphones and PDAs: (*) BlackBerrys (*) Handspring PDAs (*) iPhones (*) iPods (*) Motorola Phones (*) Nokia (*) Palm Phones & PDAs (*) Panasonic Phones & PDAs (*) Sendo Phones (*) Siemens Phones (*) Sony Ericsson Phones (*) Windows Mobile Phones (*) And More Phones Added Everyday While certain consultants can charge as much as $1900 for this type of data recovery, RecoverMySmartphone.coms rates are structured to be more reasonable: Simple data recovery is a flat, introductory rate of $199.97 while cloning data from a broken device to a new one is a flat rate of $249.97. Return shipment is included in the cost of the service. Rush service can be added for $50.00 flat. Recovered data can be used on either a Windows-based PC or Macintosh. A YouTube video preview of how RecoverMySmartphone.com works can be found at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGN-CTRSp2YMore information about both products can be found at: http://www.RecoverMySmartphone.com/ and http://twitter.com/pocketmac
With the title as long as a title could be, first I’d just like to thank you for coming to MyNokiaBlog.com and reading our posts!
Today we’ve hit 1 Million views!
I’ve also just realised we’ve somehow broken 170,000 views in January 2010!
We also won a Golden Retrevo award!
I would have been very proud to make each one a separate post, but they’ve all come at once so I’ll group them all into one post!
170,000 views last month!
I’ve said it before, but although this view count is probably a drop in the ocean compared to the other blogs about Nokia, for me I’m genuinely impressed considering that 9 months ago, we’d get the same views in a month that MyNokiaBlog now gets in a day. To give another perspective, you guys helped MyNokiaBlog get more views in January 2010, than the combined whole year of 2008 + Sept to December 07.
In September last year we passed the 100,000 and that was only due to random traffic spikes. Thanks to all your support, for sticking around, reading our posts, subscribing to our RSS, retweeting our tweets and linking back to mynokiablog! We really wouldn’t have reached this if it wasn’t for you taking the time to visit us and read our posts ^_^
1 Million!
MyNokiaBlog started up in September 2007. There were occasional posts. A few a week. Then maybe a few a month. Until one every few months. It was just (and still is) just a hobby blog (like surprisingly a lot of the mobile/nokia bloggers). It’s one of a few other things I have to juggle whilst being a Uni Student, keeping up with extra curricular responsibilities (proactive geek, ha!) balancing it all so it doesn’t affect my social life/grades/and of course, sleepz!
In our 28 months online, 65% of our views was made in the last 5 months. We started growing after an April Fools Joke on Nokia buying Palm, which Palm picked up and tweeted. From then, I gradually started blogging on a more regular basis. A few times a month….a few times a week….to now, about once a day.
I’m in my final year (and possibly going to do post graduate training) so in a few weeks, Uni work is going to be taking more focus. Hopefully I’ll keep improving in my juggling skills if I’m to keep up with everything Big thanks to Hiren, aka llaadd, who joined MyNokiaBlog in December. He’s been absolutely instrumental in MyNokiaBlog’s continued growth.
Of course, huge thanks to WOMWorld/Nokia for their continued support in lending trial handsets/accessories and event invites! We wouldn’t have been able to bring out as much new content if it wasn’t for them.
Whatever I can keep doing on this blog, ultimately, the intention will always be just a platform to document and voice my feedback and the feedback of communities on Nokia activities/services/products. It’s always cool to see Nokia picking up that feedback, be it simply just a fw feature suggestion.
Golden Retrevo Award! [Mobile Gadgets Category]
I’ve never heard about this before, I thought it was SPAM. I ignored the repeat emails saying we were nominated, and that I should promote my blog to get some votes.
Congratulations, MyNokiaBlog has been nominated for the first annual Golden Retrevo Awards. These awards honor the best and brightest independent bloggers of the gadget blogosphere. Nominations come from gadget enthusiast as well as Retrevo’s own panel of gadget experts.
Today, we had apparently won a Golden Retrevo award which made me think it was definitely SPAM. I wondered when the emails asking for my bank details would come next so I can receive my prize from a wealthy Nigerian prince.
But an email from Jennifer Jacobson of Retrevo said they saw my tweet and that they weren’t spam.
“Hi Jay,
I just saw your Tweet about The Golden Retrevo Award and wanted to clarify; it is not spam, and there is nothing you need to do. It looks like one of your readers nominated your blog a while back, for the awards. This is the first year for the Golden Retrevo Awards, so you wouldn’t have heard of it before. Retrevo is one of the top three consumer electronics shopping and review sites (with CNET and PC World).
We started the awards as a way to recognize outstanding achievements in the independent gadget blogosphere. The full page with winners is here: http://bit.ly/9TSWzO
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Again, congratulations!”
Thanks again who ever nominated MyNokiaBlog and also who ever voted! Yay! We got an award! What’s even more cool is that we’re in the same list as those other properly popular blogs…especially DailyMobile! Now that is one heck of an impressive blog achievement.
I told this to Taimas when I met him in October: I remember reading his Phattrance’s profile when he first began (I think it’s actually a touch younger than MyNokiaBlog) blogging and it mentioned that he was a full time blogger. I was like “how can you blog full time? There are so many blogs out there, you can’t just start off blogging mobile news. JUSTAMP was already doing that.
Now in such a short space, Daily Mobile is now one of the most popular hubs and aggregators of mobile news, with a new iPhone sister site too. Daily Mobile, is now at about 9 million views…a month!! So to be even put in the same list for whatever reason as DailyMobile, MobileWhack, iPhoneinCanada and CellFanatic, was for me, possibly as awesome as the Retrevo award itself.
