What is Ovi Chat:
Ovi chat is Nokia’s free chat service, it’s available public and for mostly every recent device wheather S60v3, S60v5 or even S40. The service works seemlessly on both Wi-Fi and GPRS and the user has the choice to use either one. It can work in the back ground perfectly (not available on S40) as in BB ad can be integrated in the contacts as shown above.
Features:
- Ovi Account: Ovi account is much more than just chat. Ovi Account work as your Nokia email (yourname@Ovi.com) and you can access it from your mobile and Ovi mail website. Plus your account allows you to access Ovi and sync your contacts, files, photos, calendar entries, to-do-list, notes from and to your phone and access them all in the website.
- Back support: This is may be the most critical, supporting fairly old and simple phones, Nokia is playing a smart game locking customers. List of supported phones quoted from Nokia Beta Labs

- Rich Profile: You can have your personal email, mobile, country, city and homepage, for wonderful experience.
- Availability: You can let eveyone knows when you’re availabe, busy, working, ready to chat and even you can go invisible (like offline in MSN).
- Fast message delivery: It wont take more than milliseconds to deliver messages. Tested on wireless conection on 3.5G and it’s typically the same. Also tested with 2G, the difference is not that significant and could hardly be noticed.
- Share your location: For GPS supporting phones, you can share your location with friends.
Shortcoming:
Though this is not a final and official version, it works flawlessly on the phones mentioned above. It, however has some disadvantages over competitors.
- Lack of groups: Ovi chat works like a charm but only between two contacts and it is so far the only significant shortcoming. There are neither pre-found groups nor user created ones. This is the fundamental idea behind the evolution of black berry, and if Nokia wants to give no chance for compition this is the key.
- Sudden crash: This happend few times during testing on N97, N82 and N76, but this is not a big deal as the it can be fixed in upcoming updates.
- Lack of popularity: The service is still not vary common at least here in Saudi Arabia. It could be because it’s not been officially realized.
